Hey Laurens, are you ready to lace up your running shoes and join in on some festive fun? Well, mark your calendars because the annual Reindeer Run 5K is back and it’s celebrating a spectacular milestone this year – its 25th anniversary! This family-friendly event supports the Laurens YMCA and invites everyone to join in on the holiday spirit while getting active.
On December 14th at 9 a.m., runners and walkers will gather in downtown Laurens to take off on a 5K course that winds through the heart of our beautiful city. For those who prefer a shorter distance, there’s a Fun Run/Walk happening right after at 9:05 a.m., perfect for kiddos aged 12 and under. The fun kicks off and concludes near the historic downtown square at the Truist Bank, where there’ll even be an exciting award ceremony to celebrate participants’ achievements.
Whether you’re a serious competitor looking to improve your personal best, or just out for a leisurely stroll with friends (or furry pals on a leash!), this event has something for everyone. Emily Dasher, Vice President of Administration at Lakelands Regional YMCA, expressed her delight saying, “Our Reindeer Run welcomes everyone, no matter their pace or their reason for participating.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be a race without some sweet incentives! The event is timed, and there are awards for winners in every age division. Those speedy racers will have a chance to earn a $100 prize for first place, and $50 for second place in both male and female categories. Awards will also be handed out for first, second, and third place in several age groups, ranging from 10 and under to 70 and over. But don’t worry, every participant will head home with a ribbon recognizing their efforts!
What makes the Reindeer Run truly special is its impact on the community. All proceeds go to the YMCA’s youth scholarship program. In fact, last year alone, over $345,000 was awarded to local youth, giving them access to various programs that promote health and wellness. Emily Dasher highlighted this commitment stating, “It’s a testament to the Y’s commitment to making a difference in people’s lives.” When you participate in the Reindeer Run, you’re not just racing – you’re making a genuine difference in the lives of young people in Laurens County.
Get ready to deck the halls and the running paths! Many participants come dressed in their favorite Christmas attire, adding to the festive atmosphere. So whether you’ve got a Santa suit or some reindeer antlers lying around, don’t hesitate to bring a little holiday cheer to the event.
It’s essential to recognize those who help the event shine! The Reindeer Run is generously sponsored by local businesses such as Self Regional Healthcare, Orthopedic Associates of the Lakelands, L&L Office Supply Inc., and many others. Emily expressed gratitude saying, “Our sponsors play such an essential role in helping the event reach its full potential.”
If you’re eager to join the festivities, be sure to register by November 24 to secure a free race shirt. After that date, registration fees go up, and there’s no guarantee of shirts, so don’t miss out! Grab your race packets on December 13 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Laurens YMCA or on the day of the event from 8 to 8:45 a.m..
As Emily Dasher so aptly put it, “This event is more than just a race. It’s become a meaningful tradition for the community.” So, whether you’re running for fun, fitness, or to give back, join us for an unforgettable experience. Let’s come together and celebrate the holiday season in the best way possible!
