Vermont High School Fall Sports Season Kicks Off

As the 2024 Vermont high school fall sports season gets underway, teams across the state have begun showcasing their skills in various competitions. This week has already seen some exciting games in soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running.

Field Hockey Highlights

In a thrilling match, the University of Vermont field hockey team pulled off a close victory against UC Davis, finishing 3-2 after overtime. Marie Dijkstra was the star of the game, scoring two goals, including the game-winner with just 42 seconds left in the first overtime period. Meg Weyer also contributed, scoring one goal, while Sophia Drees and Ila Gunner each provided assists and 4 saves, respectively. For UC Davis, Katie Kim scored one goal.

Boys and Girls Soccer Updates

The South Burlington boys’ soccer team dominated Rutland with a spectacular 8-0 victory. Sawyer Bailey led the charge with three goals, while Julia Vandernat notched two goals of her own. Rutland’s goalie, Sammy Cacace, made an impressive 27 saves to keep the score from being higher.

On the girls’ side, Burlington secured a solid win over St. Johnsbury, finishing 5-1. Glenna Westbrook was instrumental in the victory with two goals, while teammates Eva Schwartz and Ella Knudsen added three more to the scoreboard.

Volleyball Results

In volleyball action, South Burlington swept Mount Mansfield in straight sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-20) for a strong start this season. Meanwhile, Essex also won against Burlington, taking the match 3-0.

Looking Ahead

Fans can look forward to more action in the upcoming games scheduled for this Saturday, with matches set to begin at 10 a.m., featuring teams like U-32 at Spaulding and Milton facing St. Johnsbury.
