Union Redevelopment Efforts Press On Amid Severe, Scorching Heat
UNION, S.C. — On Thursday, Aug. 1, enduring the sweltering heat and high humidity in Upstate, South Carolina was no small feat. The thermometer outside the Spartanburg Community College Union Campus displayed a scorching 95 degrees Fahrenheit just before 2:30 p.m.
Mowing Under the Blazing Sun
Despite these harsh conditions, crews were determined and pushed forward with efforts, mowing grass and weeding around the old Union Oil Mill. The property is being prepared for sale as part of a larger redevelopment project.
**Andre Smith**, a property owner and partner involved in the redevelopment, mentioned, “With the rain we’ve had over the last couple of weeks, the grass has almost gotten out of control. The guys were just: ‘Hey, let’s get it done.’ I was just like: ‘We have to be careful, making sure we hydrate, stay in some shade, and get some water at the same time.’”
Weather Warnings Ahead
The region is bracing for even tougher weather conditions, with future forecasts indicating near-record highs and dangerous heat indices. Crews are keen to complete outdoor tasks before severe weather rolls in.
Union’s Redevelopment Vision
This project is part of Union’s broader redevelopment efforts, which include plans to open a steakhouse restaurant in collaboration with Trevor Booker, a notable figure who played basketball at Clemson and in the NBA. These plans signal a rejuvenation for the area that many are excited to see unfold.
Staying Safe in the Heat
Residents and workers alike are reminded to stay safe during these high temperatures. Key tips include:
- Hydrate frequently, even if not feeling thirsty
- Take frequent breaks in the shade
- Wear light, breathable clothing
- Avoid working during peak heat hours, if possible
